Improved dyspnea, fatigue, respiratory and peripheral muscle strength, exercise capacity, and quality of life after exercise training in post-COVID-19

Background Exercise training after COVID-19 infection may improve functional loss in the post-acute period. Aims We aimed to investigate the effects of 12-week exercise training on pulmonary function, functional capacity, balance, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) six months after intensive care unit (ICU) discharge in patients with severe COVID-19 infection. Methods Fifty post-COVID patients (35 M, 15F) who were followed in the ICU for at least one day and were in the sixth month of ICU discharge were included in the study. Twenty-five patients were in the exercise group (age=52.88±11.95 years, 18M, 7F), and 25 patients (a . . .ge=53.64±11.92 years 17M, 8F) were in the control group. In addition to their routine follow-up, the exercise group received aerobic exercise (30-minute walking training at 70-80% of the 6MWT distance) and strengthening training (upper and lower extremities) for 12 weeks. Patients performed exercise three days per week (twice under the supervision of a physiotherapist and once at home). In the control group, only routine follow-up continued. At baseline, 6th and 12th weeks, pulmonary function and respiratory (MIP and MEP, respectively) and peripheral muscle strength (quadriceps and handgrip), exercise capacity (six-minute walk test, 6MWT), dyspnea (Modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale, MMRC), fatigue (Fatigue Severity Score, FSS), balance (Time-Up Go test, TUG), cognitive function (Mini Mental State Examination, MMSE), anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, HADS), and quality of life (Nottingham Health Profile, NHP, and St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire, SGRQ) were evaluated.
