Impact of financial development and economic growth on energy consumption: A panel vector autoregressive analysis for the comparison of G7 and top 10 emerging market economies
(Sage Publications Ltd, 2021) Aslan, Alper; Gozbasi, Onur; Altinoz, Buket; Altuntas, Mehmet
The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between energy consumption, financial development, and economic growth in the case of the G7 economies and emerging market economies. To this end, the role of the banking sector, as well as data from both the stock and the bond market, are explicitly used to proxy financial development. It is used the panel VAR method for the data period from 1990 to 2015. The results illustrate that there is a positive link between the stock market development and energy consumption in both G7 and top 10 emerging market economies in the long run. Also, while banking sector development in G7 countries decreases energy consumption in the long run, increases it in emerging market economies. Another aspect of the results is the determination of the energy-enhancing effect of the bond market development in the G7 countries. Moreover, while the results once again emphasize the existence of the link between financial development and energy consumption, they differ in terms of developed and developing countries.

Interaction between stock market development and economic growth: Evidence from developing countries
(Eskisehir Osmangazi Univ, Fac Education, 2015) Gozbasi, Onur
The purpose of this study is to investigate the interaction between stock market development and economic growth in the case of seven developing countries between the 1989-2011 period. To this end we employed panel cointegration and panel causality tests to two different stock market development indicators representing stock markets depth and efficiency. Results indicate no long-run cointegration relationship between the variables in question. On the other hand, we have found causality between the variables.

Persistence of profit in energy industry: Dynamic evidence from Turkish companies
(Econjournals, 2015) Gozbasi, Onur; Aslan, Alper
One of the main lacks of the profit persistence literature is the fact that it focuses on only manufacturing, banking and food industries. This study, for the first time, extends the literature by considering the intensity of competition in 13 energy companies from 1997 to 2011 in Turkey as an emerging market. The results show that the degree of persistence is higher in the energy industry mainly due to a low degree of market saturation, weak price competition and a lowly concentrated retailing industry, thus providing no support for the hypothesis that there is a lower persistence of profits in emerging markets due to more intense competition in Turkey. © 2015, International Journal of Economics and Financial Issues. Re-examining the Turkish stock market efficiency: Evidence from nonlinear unit root tests
(Elsevier, 2014) Gozbasi, Onur; Kucukkaplan, Ilhan; Nazlioglu, Saban
This paper re-examines the efficient market hypothesis (EMH) in the Turkish stock market by utilizing the recent developments in nonlinear unit root tests. To this end, we first employ the linearity test developed by Harvey et al. (2008) and then carry out the nonlinear ESTAR unit root test recently developed by Kruse (2011). The results show that Borsa Istanbul stock price index series have nonlinear behavior and follow the random walk (non-stationary) process, supporting the EMH in Turkish stock market which has weak-form efficiency.
